Steps to Work logo

If you are currently unemployed and interested in starting your own business, then you may be eligible for Steps to Work. You must contact your Jobs and Benefits Office regarding your eligibility and to gain a referral onto the programme.

How does the Programme work?

Phase 1

A basic awareness session with an experienced business advisor who will discuss with you your proposed business idea.

Phase 2

Attendance at the Go For It Business Training Programme, where you will receive support, mentoring and help to develop a business plan.

Phase 3

A period of test trading for up to 26 weeks with the support and guidance of your business advisor. This period allows participants to experience the realities of self employment and to ascertain if their proposed business is sustainable.

What funding is available?

In addition to your benefits, you can receive an extra £15.38 each week while you are participating in the ‘test trading’ phase of the programme.

Who can apply?

Anyone over 18 years old (or lone parents aged 16 years old or over) who is not working (or working less than 16 hours each week). You will be able to participate in Steps to Work if you are claiming benefit or if you are not working and not claiming benefit.
